Yes, gosh, yes! Acupuncture is helpful before and after surgery. Especially if you’re nervous before surgery (who isn’t, right?) schedule an acupuncture appointment a week before and it will calm your nerves and help you can get some sleep before your procedure. It will also boost your immune system- you want to be the healthiest you can before surgery so you can have a speedy recovery.
After surgery, acupuncture will help reduce postoperative pain and side effects from anesthesia (nausea and vomiting) and pain medications (constipation).
It is also very effective at treating and reducing scars. After your surgical scars have started healing, I can needle around or under the scar to help prevent adhesions from forming.
Since rest and sleep are essential when recovering from surgery, acupuncture will help you relax so you get the sleep you need for your body to heal.
If there is rehabilitation involved, it’s okay to still get acupuncture- in fact, I recommend that my patients in rehab come the day after they have rehab since acupuncture can help with any soreness after exercises.
So if you’re planning to have surgery, consider having acupuncture before and after the surgery. Study after study has shown you’ll recover more quickly and require fewer pain medications if you do.
