The Story Behind the Name
I often get asked about the name of my business, which makes me smile. Many people think I had a horse (I did not) or that it’s a nod to the John Steinbeck novel (The Red Pony). The truth is, it’s a nickname for my grandpa, who was an American Indian. He was a red pony in my eyes ever since I was a little girl. He sometimes would call me Snowbird due to my light skin and blue eyes. So in my imagination, we were always Snowbird and Red Pony (sounds like a good story, right? Maybe I’ll write it someday).
My Grandpa had such a huge impact on my world and was a great source of encouragement for a timid, anxious little girl. When I would hesitate about doing something, he would encourage me to take action. “If you want something, go get it. Don’t sit there and expect it to come to you.”
These words have lit a fire under my feet time and time again. Even as a grown woman and mother, I whisper his words to motivate me to move forward and take bigger steps in my life. And despite the short time we had together, he lives on in my heart and will always be my Red Pony.
